Gluten Free

Celiac disease – also referred to as celiac sprue, nontropical sprue, gluten intolerance, or gluten-sensitive enteropathy – is a condition that damages the lining of the small intestine and prevents it from absorbing parts of food that are important for staying healthy. The damage is due to a reaction to eating gluten, which is found in wheat, barley, rye, and possibly oats.

The exact cause of celiac disease is unknown. The lining of the intestines contains areas called villi, which help absorb nutrients. When people with celiac disease eat foods or use products that contain gluten, their immune system reacts by damaging these villi. This damage affects the ability to absorb nutrients properly. A person becomes malnourished, no matter how much food he or she eats.

At Sweet Clover Market, we understand that our customers living with celiac disease (or individuals looking to eat gluten-free for any other reasons) are eager to have access to a broad selection of great-tasting gluten-free foods. We work hard to bring these to you, and we dedicate a large section of one of our grocery aisles to just gluten-free products. You'll find crackers, cereals, baking mixes, gluten-free flours, and pastas. On the end of our gluten-free aisle you'll find a rack that holds a variety of snack foods like chips and rice cakes. We also have a selection of gluten-free snack/energy bars.

We also have one whole freezer dedicated to gluten-free foods, loaded with all sorts of ready-to-eat foods: soups, muffins, breads, bagels, rolls, waffles, pizzas, desserts, and ice cream – all gluten-free! You'll recognize manufacturer names such as Rudi's, Against the Grain Gourmet from Brattleboro, and Udi's gluten-free foods.

We also carry a limited selection of gluten-free beers, gluten-removed beers, meads and several hard ciders that are acceptable for people living gluten-free.
